Perfect weather Thursday night graced the crowd gathered to participate in the Shelter Valley Folk Festival’s 11th annual Local Songwriters Showcase. Ten contestants gathered to share their songwriting and passion for music with the attentive crowd and judges.
Participants hale from each corner of the event’s borders: Bowmanville to Peterborough to Napanee. This year's songwriters were Brian Hall, Cale Crowe, Cedarail, Cheryl Casselman, Chris Devlin, Dimitri Paptheodorou, Ellen Torrie, Melodi Ryan, Reid McDonald, and Tim Sheffield (click photos to enlarge).
The three official judges were past showcase winner Andrew Mack, George Lee previously of George’s Guitars, and radio talent York Bell Smith, pictured with Interim Artistic DirectorLesley Marie Boileau. The audience was also invited to participate in the judging.
Each contestant shared two of their original songs with the crowd. The pieces were judged based on originality, lyrics, melody, and presentation. It was a difficult decision, but the three finalists were selected to participate at the Shelter Valley Folk Festival this coming Labour Day Weekend September 4th-6th. A hearty congratulations to the three finalists:
